The essentials in a few seconds
Do you need insurance cover against flooding? ‘Of course’, says everyone who lives near a stream or a river and where a flood could really put the building under water.
But it's not just the big floods, that make the headlines of the newspapers, that you should consider.
- For example, if your plot of land lies on a slope, or on unstable ground, that could be deformed or washed away by the rain, then bear in mind that a subsidence of ground or a landslide can also lead to major damage.
- The same applies if one of of the entrances to your house is at or below ground level, surface water could run into your house, e.g. garage door, an entrance door or patio door.
- And last but not least, do not underestimate the sewage back-up that could come from a public sewer!
If it rains long and hard enough, and several buildings share the same drainage system, then it's obvious, that even the largest drainage channel will eventually reach its limits and the soiled water will have to find another way. In the worst case, through your home! It doesn't matter whether this happens by chance or because of climate change. However, such situations have become more frequent in recent years. The question of whether or not to protectagainst flooding, is a question everyone should be asking themselves these days, not just those who live near a river.
