Is it useful to take out travel insurance?

Travel insurance is your best protection against unexpected health or logistical problems while travelling. It can cover emergency medical expenses, hospitalisation, repatriation costs, cancellations and loss or damage to luggage. Luxembourg residents can benefit from the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), but this is limited to urgent care within the EU/EEA and does not include repatriation.
For example, if you are admitted to hospital in the United States, your bill could be extremely high: ‑ in 2023, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation, the average cost of a day’s hospitalisation was around €3,130.

When facing sums like these, travel insurance seems to be a vital safety net, likely to prevent you from incurring huge expenses in the event of a medical emergency abroad. Travel with peace of mind!

Is it mandatory to take out travel insurance?

In Luxembourg, there is no national legal requirement for residents to take out travel insurance. Nonetheless, some States impose this condition for granting a visa or authorising entry into their territory.

  • In Cuba, travel medical insurance has been a legal requirement since Resolution no 168/2010, which makes it mandatory for all foreign visitors to present a valid insurance certificate that will cover healthcare costs during their stay.Other countries, such as Russia, also require valid travel insurance.
  • Certain tourism service providers (cruise companies, trekking agencies, diving schools etc.) may refuse to take a booking if you do not have proof of insurance that covers accidents, repatriation or cancellations.

It is advisable to check the requirements of the countries you are visiting and those of service providers systematically, to avoid being refused entry or treatment during your stay.
