Health and sickness insurances
The private health insurance products from DKV Luxembourg provide you the best possible medical services to ensure you an optimal coverage in case of illness. Outpatient, inpatient and dental treatments as well as visual aids are covered with high reimbursements, even if the statutory health insurance scheme (CNS) does not cover the costs.
DKV Luxembourg has been active in the Grand Duchy since 1981 and is the market leader in the field of private health insurance. The acquisition of the brand by the LALUX Group in 2015 enabled the latter to consolidate its position on the market. The wide range of products for private and business clients extends from supplementary health insurance plans to daily sickness benefit insurance up to full coverage – both at home and abroad.
DKV Luxembourg is your health specialist within the LALUX Group.
What is health insurance?
In Luxembourg, health protection rests on two pillars : the statutory national health insurance scheme managed by the National Health Fund, the Caisse Nationale de Santé (CNS) and supplementary private health insurances.
The CNS is a mandatory scheme financed by social security contributions, which covers costs related to sickness, maternity and prevention for all affiliates. However, it often only provides partial reimbursements.
That’s why many people choose a supplementary (private) health insurance provider that can take over in instances that are not covered or only partially covered by the CNS.
| CNS | Private health insurance | |
| Type of cover | Mandatory, basic cover | Optional, additional or comprehensive |
| Reimbursements | Partial, at a fixed rate | High, up to 100% of the actual costs |
| Type of care covered | Routine care and basic hospitalisation | Extended health benefits: optical, dental, alternative medicine etc. |
| Choice & comfort | Limited (e.g. shared room, doctors contracted by the social security to work at agreed rates) | Large choice of establishments, individual room |
| Additional services | Not included | Video appointment, “assistance santé” healthcare support, |
Why should you take out supplementary health insurance?
Even if the CNS ensures some reimbursement, certain items are not or are barely covered: dentures, glasses, alternative medicine or health treatment abroad.
In the event of hospitalisation or major treatment, the disparity between the actual costs and the sums reimbursed can be several hundreds or even thousands of euros.
An adapted supplementary health insurer can give you peace of mind and easy access to the best treatments, while limiting the financial impact.
What is covered by a health insurance policy in Luxembourg?
DKV Luxembourg’s health insurance policies offer extended cover that far exceeds the limits of the CNS.
Depending on the offer chosen, they can cover:
- Extended hospital stays: an individual room, fees for accompanying person, your free choice of establishment in Luxembourg and in the EU countries
- Outpatient care (consultations, analyses, specialists)
- Dental costs (dentures, orthodontics) and optical treatment (glasses, contact lenses, laser surgery)
- Exclusive services such as BEST CARE support⁺
