Did you know that Luxembourg has one of the best-performing healthcare systems in the world? As soon as you start work in Luxembourg,  your employer registers you with the Centre Commun de la Sécurité Sociale (CCSS). This means that you are automatically affiliated to the statutory health insurance scheme.

Private-sector employees are insured  by the Caisse Nationale de Santé(CNS). As a member, you will receive a social security card with your personal identification number. This card must be presented to all healthcare providers. Your children, and your spouse who's not working, are also insured with you.  Everyone receives their own social security card.

Here are some special features of Luxembourg : Unlike many other countries, you have a free choice of doctor and hospital in Luxembourg. The staff of medical establishments are often multilingual. You can communicate in Luxembourgish, but also in French, German and English, and sometimes even in Portuguese or Italian.

For most consultations, you must first pay for the service and then send the bill to the CNS for reimbursement. For lab tests, medication, physiotherapy and consultations with certain doctors, third-party payment is applicable. In these cases, you pay only the part of the bill that remains at your expense.  As a cross-border commuter, you are covered by the CNS for treatment in Luxembourg and by the health insurance fund in your country of residence for treatment carried out there.

Please note : medical expenses are rarely reimbursed in full. As a result, the patient may have to pay a potentially high amount, particularly for : glasses or laser surgery, children's orthodontics or dentures, first-class hospital supplements, hospitalisation abroad, or alternative treatments such as osteopathy.

To limit the amount of medical expenses you have to pay and optimise your health cover, it is advisable to take out supplementary health insurance.DKV Luxembourg, a member of the LALUX Group offers solutions to suit every situation: resident, cross-border commuter, self-employed, EU civil servant or traveller.
