When you are involved in a car accident, it is perfectly normal for emotions to get the better of you. That is why it is important to get to know the accident report in advance, in order for you to know exactly how to fill it in, in the event of an accident.

The most important thing is that you are out of danger before filling in the report. One report consists of 2 originals, where the first page is automatically transferred to the second page by the pressure of the pen as it is filled in.  This way, each party has an identical copy to give to their insurer.

Thus, only one statement needs to be completed per accident. The report requests information on : the date, place and time, injured people, material damage apart from cars, witnesses, the exact course of events, and the details of the parties involved.

Next, there is a column A and B, one for each party, where data is requested for : the insured person, the car, the insurance company and the driver. Fill in the form as accurately as possible. It doesn't matter whose details are in column A or B. It would be best to make a sketch of the accident to clarify the course of the accident to the insurer and indicate the damage to the cars with arrows. Taking pictures of the damages is also helpful.

Once the statement has been completed and checked by both parties, you can sign it. Nothing can be changed on the first page once it has been signed.

If you do not agree with what is written on the statement, you should not sign it. Even if someone is urging you to do so. In those cases, possible witnesses are very important. The insurance companies will then try to settle the liability issue later.

It is best to fill in the accident report immediately at the scene of the accident together with the other person involved. This is the only way you can make sure, that you are able to best describe the exact circumstances and nothing can be twisted afterwards.

Also remember to take an accident report with you, when you're travelling with your own car or rent a car at your holiday destination. The report you know from Luxembourg, is valid throughout Europe! In case you do not have an accident report with you, it is advisable to call the police.
